The second quarter of 2024 showcased an interesting performance for the top five News and Magazines applications on the Android platform in New Zealand. Data from Sensor Tower offers a detailed look at weekly downloads and active users for these apps.

BBC: World News & Stories had a notable spike in downloads mid-April, peaking at approximately 1.4K by the week of April 22. However, the rest of the quarter saw more moderate numbers, fluctuating between 60 and 1.1K downloads. Weekly active users trended downward initially, dropping from 4.6K to 3.7K by early May, before seeing a slight recovery to reach around 4K by the end of June.

Stuff.co.nz experienced a significant jump in downloads in May, with a peak of 1.3K in the week of May 20. This was followed by a decline, settling around the 250 mark by the end of June. Active users showed a strong performance, starting at 14.2K and peaking at 17.7K in late May before stabilizing around 14K in June.

1NEWS showed consistent download numbers throughout the quarter with slight variations, peaking at 394 downloads in the last week of June.

NZ Herald News stood out in terms of revenue, maintaining a steady flow around $4K to $5K weekly, with a peak of $5.2K in late June. Downloads were relatively stable, ranging from 161 to 533 weekly.

RNZ saw a gradual increase in downloads, starting at 286 in early April and peaking at 376 by the end of June.
